In this role you will:
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary community mental health team providing treatment and consultation according to best practices for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind children, adults and older adults experiencing a severe behavioural, social and/or emotional,, or environmental problems.
- Clients may have concurrent developmental, language and/or neurodevelopmental needs.
- Perform behavioural assessments, and develops and implements individualized treatment plan in collaboration with team to address challenging behaviours and/or environmental stressors to improve client’s quality of life.
- Provide interventions, often by outreach, including functional assessments, treatment/intervention planning, family and care team education, individual supportive counselling, and parent/caregiver groups.
- Establish and maintains relationships based on respect; initiates and participates in case meetings; collaborates, consults, and provides support to colleagues; provides consultative services with client’s healthcare team and other community resources; and aids client and family access to services.
- Participate in team meetings, continuing education, conferences, and/or corporate initiatives and engages in on-going team planning, development, evaluation and quality improvement activities.
Education & Experience
- Masters Degree in a related, regulated Health Science discipline (such as Occupational Therapy, Clinical Counseling, Social Work)
- Three (3) years’ recent, related experience providing behavioural consultation services to client populations with behavioural, social and emotional disorders or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience working with Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind populations.
- Fluent in American Sign Language.
- Registration with Provincial licensing/governing body of profession if applicable.
- Valid BC Drivers License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and the diverse background and experiences of Deaf individuals.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Functional Behaviour Assessments and Support Plans.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate directly with clients using American Sign Language.
- Knowledge and competency in developing safety plans for children and youth.
- Broad knowledge of bio-psycho-social issues that may occur in response to changing mental health and substance use.
- Broad knowledge of mental illness diagnosis and treatment.
- Broad knowledge of psychotherapeutic and supportive counseling skills.
- Broad knowledge of other facilities and community resources.
- Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
- Broad knowledge of the normal growth and development of children.
- Broad knowledge of school, and legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to client.
- Demonstrated ability to work with children with serious behavioural, social and emotional issues.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients and their families, educational personnel, service providers, colleagues, physician, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.
- Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes communication and lead to a co-operative approach to problem solving within a multidisciplinary setting.
- Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds.
