Community health and home care nursing

Hospital nurses are often pulled in so many directions they don’t have time to get to know their patients. For some nurses, this inability to spend quality time with patients is at odds with why they entered the nursing profession. Community and home care nursing is a solution because it offers:

• An opportunity to develop knowledge of a wide range of medical and surgical conditions including primary health care, rehabilitation and palliative care and includes health promotion, prevention, early intervention, education and counselling to their clients.
• Independent practice within a supportive multidisciplinary team environment
• A sense of satisfaction, helping client remain involved in their family life and stay at home

Public health

Public health professionals are responsible for protecting the health of residents in our communities. For nurses interested in providing public health services for women, infants and children in homes, clinics, drop-in centres, community sites and child care facilities – this is your field!

Staff at the "field level" are assigned to geographic districts and often carry a broad mandate for delivery of health protection programs in those areas. Hours of work vary across health service areas, with the availability of compressed work-week options in some areas.
