So Lin

Registered Nurse, Operating Room Desk Coordinator
Vancouver General Hospital

“My grandmother was a major influence on me and because of her I went into nursing. She was not a nurse. But when she was in hospital in Hong Kong with lung cancer, I saw how the nurses took care of her and I thought I could do better.

I’ve worked at VGH for 16 years and much has changed since I started. The layout of the operating rooms has been modified tremendously and the types of surgeries we do are far more complex. There is greater variety of surgeries being done and the patients we treat today are profoundly sicker and require more attention. The hectic pace in the ORs can be exhausting mentally and physically but I like responding to the added pressure. I also love my job because of the skilled and dedicated people in the ORs who work as a team. Sometimes patients arrive in the OR seriously ill, and fortunately in the vast majority of cases they do well and recover, eventually going home. Some days the work is hard and demanding but my reward is seeing patients recover and leave the hospital.”
