Application Tips for New Graduates

As a new graduate, it can be overwhelming to begin your job search. We’re here to help! In this guide, you will find helpful tips on what to include on your cover letter/resume and what to expect during the application process at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).

Cover Letter

In your cover letter, provide a brief introduction of yourself and express why you are interested in a position with VCH. Ensure you identify the desired area you wish to be considered for (acute care, community, mental health and addictions, long-term care, etc.) as well as your short and long-term career goals.


On your resume, it is essential to make sure your contact information is correct! Double-check to make sure there are no typos and ensure the voicemail on your phone is set up. In the education section of your resume, include the program and school you attended along with the commencement and completion date (month/year). If you have any certifications, such as CPR, list those along with the expiry date (month/year).

Lastly, include any clinical placements along with work or volunteer experience. Below is an example of a great way to present this information:










Application Process

  1. Apply
    Visit careers.vch.ca and search for job opportunities in your field (ex. “Registered Nurse”).
    Look through the job postings and apply to those that you are interested in and qualified for by clicking the “Apply Now” button on the job posting.
    You will need to create a profile on our website and attach your resume. Then you will be asked a series of questions that are attached to the job posting and you will submit your application.
  1. Discussion with a Recruiter
    If your education and experience align with the job you have applied for, you will be contacted by a Recruitment Advisor from our team to have a quick discussion about the position and your experience.
  1. Referral to the hiring team
    After a discussion with our Recruitment team, your application will be sent to the hiring team for consideration. Here, an applicant shortlist is decided for the position.
  1. Interview
    If you are shortlisted for this position by the hiring team, you will be contacted to arrange an interview.
  1. References
    After a successful interview, you will be contacted by our team to provide three references. It is a good idea to let your references know ahead of time that someone from our team will be contacting them for a reference check for you.
  2. Offer and Hire
    The final stage of the application process is to be offered the position. Welcome to the VCH team!
