In our continuation of Music Therapy Awareness Month, we are excited to highlight Annie Yip. She is a Music Therapist Sole Charge at Little Mountain Place (LMP), a long-term care facility with 116 resident beds.
Annie provides a variety of group music therapy sessions, as well as customized individual sessions with geriatrics, older adult mental health and end-of-life care.
“I enjoy learning about my patients and their life experiences,” Annie tells us. One of her favourite things about her job is seeing her patients smile. “Patients in the handbells group are actively learning and practicing new songs. When they successfully play a piece, you can just tell how accomplished and empowered they feel just by their facial expressions: everyone has a big smile. I am so honoured to be able to improve their quality of life through music therapy.”
Annie credits her children as her top motivators to work in her role. “I hope to represent to find their passion, follow their dreams, work hard and enjoy what they do.”
Working at Little Mountain Place
“I am so fortunate to be at LMP. I truly lucked out with such a close-knit team! My manager has been supportive since day one in welcoming me and supporting my music therapy ideas. The recreation and rehab team work closely to ensure our programming meets the needs of our patients and is flexible to accommodate program times and locations. The nurses and care staff help bring residents to programs. I can sincerely say that I am excited to go into work every day knowing that I will work alongside my coworkers.”
Annie works alongside another music therapist at LMP where they provide one another with support and share ideas of how to improve practice. Whether it is learning new music and instruments or creating new methods to deliver programming, the music therapists are constantly evolving.
Fun fact: when Annie was young, she trained for swimming at the Summer Olympics! She loves all types of water sports and during the summer, she goes kayaking every week.
