Staff Spotlight
Kristen Jacobson, Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Today, we are excited to introduce Kristen, Diagnostic Medical Sonographer at the Whistler Health Care Centre (WHCC).
Living and working in Whistler
The WHCC is a busy diagnostic and treatment centre that also provides urgent and emergency health care services in addition to a range of community health programs. Staff at WHCC specialize in treating sports-related injuries and stabilizing trauma and critical care patients for transfer to Lower Mainland hospitals.
Originally from Alberta, Kristen relocated to the Sea-to-Sky region in 2019. “What motivated me to make the decision to move was the endless outdoor activities and the sense of community I noticed when I would visit before,” she says. While Whistler is a world-renowned four-season resort, it is home to only 12,000 people, with 3 million annual visitors, and offers incredible opportunities to live, work, and play.
Working at the WHCC, Kristen says that she “can confidently say that I have never felt so supported in a workplace as I do at the Whistler Health Care Centre. Management truly listens to you, wants the best for you, and makes it a priority to make sure you have the best equipment and anything else you need to perform your job safely and efficiently,” says Kristen. Not only is management supportive, but so is the entire team! Anywhere from the front desk to the janitorial staff, the whole team is friendly, kind, and willing to lend a hand.
The Sonography profession
Kristen is specialized and incredibly passionate about, Vascular and Musculoskeletal ultrasound. “I previously worked in a dedicated vascular lab, and while I do not do as much vascular anymore, I am excited to be doing more musculoskeletal work in Whistler,” Kristen says.
She also finds the body fascinating and working in ultrasound she is able to see how it works, regenerates, and produces anomalies. Kristen says that the most exciting part of the job is seeing something interesting or rare, “but the most rewarding parts are when your findings are able to help the patient’s diagnoses or outcome.” Every day there is something new for Kristen to see or learn.
Kristen’s mother was a nurse for many years and was the inspiration behind her seeking out a career in health care. “My mom always said to treat every patient as if they are your family member and that has always stuck with me. I strive to provide care to each patient the way I would want my family to be taken care of,” she says.
