Staff Spotlight
Simran Bir, Registered Nurse
Our Nurses. Our Future. That is the theme of this year’s National Nursing Week. Today we are pleased to shine a light on Simran Bir, a Critical Care nurse in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Vancouver General Hospital.
Simran speaks very highly of her team and says she feels ‘absolutely’ supported in her role with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). “The teamwork in the ICU is incredible,” she says. “From leadership to the doctors, residents, nurses, dieticians, social workers, and even the C. Diff dogs! There is no shortage of support and amazing teamwork that makes working at VCH enjoyable. It is the main reason why I love my job.”
For Simran, connecting with her patients and families is one thing she enjoys most. “The patients that come into the hospital are going through the worst times of their lives,” she says. “It’s inspiring that I can be someone who brings some sense of relief and peace during their stay.”
As one of the most reputable ICUs in the country, Simran says something that makes it stand out is the amount of staff support and resources available. “Our team strives to provide the best results and outcomes through high-quality patient care,” she says. “We have a lot of learning opportunities here and it’s exciting that VCH is so supportive of this.”
The VCH values of We Care for Everyone, We Are Always Learning, and We Strive for Better Results align seamlessly with Simran’s personal ones. “We come across a diverse group of patients, families, and community at VCH and it is imperative that embracing all this diversity makes for the best patient and family-centered care.”
Simran let us know that she works with a hearing impairment. “VCH has provided me with some of the best opportunities to be the best I can be in my career and I am so thankful that I am able to work with an invisible disability with confidence. I cannot imagine working anywhere else and have no desire to!”
