Key hand over complete: step inside the new Paul Myers Tower

An exciting new milestone has been reached on the Lions Gate Redevelopment project – the key handover to the new acute tower at Lions Gate Hospital (LGH). This milestone is not just about the completion of construction, it's the beginning of a new chapter at the Lions Gate Hospital campus, the coastal communities we serve and a landmark achievement in Vancouver Coastal Health's journey toward enhancing patient care.

The six-floor tower called the Paul Myers Tower features 108 private patient rooms, eight state-of-the-art operating rooms, 39 pre-operative and post-operative spaces, a modern medical reprocessing department and dedicated outpatient clinic spaces. Designed in collaboration with theSḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, the tower has additional green and cultural spaces to support recovery, healing and wellness.

Designed with staff, medical staff, patients and families in mind, these new spaces will improve workflows, enhance efficiency, and create a more welcoming, comfortable environment for everyone. From streamlined work areas to thoughtfully crafted patient spaces, the new tower is built to support our commitment to exceptional care and a great work experience.

What's next?

As we prepare for the grand opening for our first patients, we're gearing up for the next critical phase: fitting out the hospital with systems furniture, medical and non-medical equipment, all IT devices (including new technologies) and the fit out of the supply rooms.

We're committed to making sure that everyone feels well-prepared and supported throughout this process. To support this transition, we're providing tailored training sessions and "Day in the Life" exercises to help all Lions Gate Hospital staff and medical teams get up to speed and feel confident in the new space.

Celebrating together

This milestone is the result of years of planning, hard work, and collaboration by teams across VCH. The key handover and the progress so far reflects the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved.

“It has truly taken a village to bring the new Paul Myers Tower at LGH from design and construction to our current phase of operational readiness and transition planning. Working in this new hospital will be a transformational experience for both our staff and medical teams, enhancing every aspect of our patients' journey of care," says Shelly Fleck, Chief Clinical Planning Officer, Major Redevelopment and Expansion Projects, LGH ACF & VGH Operations. “Our Redevelopment Team is excited to collaborate with our operational partners and to kick off the countdown to an incredible new chapter together as we welcome our first patients on March 9, 2025."
