New UBC Medical Education Centre at Richmond Hospital
Another milestone for the redevelopment project - a necessary relocation to prepare for construction of the Yurkovich Family Pavilion, a nine-floor acute care tower.
Another milestone for the Richmond Hospital Redevelopment Project has been achieved with the relocated UBC Faculty of Medicine Medical Education Centre now complete. This relocation was a necessary step to prepare for construction of the Yurkovich Family Pavilion, a nine-floor acute care tower.
The UBC Faculty of Medicine provides innovative educational and research programs across the province through an integrated delivery model including clinical academic campuses like Richmond Hospital.
"We are very excited about the opening of the Medical Education Center at Richmond Hospital. It compliments the existing UBC Space on 5 North and enhances the medical education experiences of medical trainees in Richmond,” said Dr. Matthew Kwok, Clinical Associate Professor, Dept. of Emergency Medicine, Site Lead (Richmond), Vancouver Fraser Medical Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia.
“In this Medical Education Center, there will be 2 large seminar rooms that are available for didactic training. These rooms are equipped with well-designed audio-visual equipment to facilitate in-person or remote training. In addition, there is also an enhanced clinical training room equipped with ward-like equipment for a more realistic learning experience. We look forward to using the Medical Education Center to support the education and training of physicians of tomorrow."
This new purpose-built structure is located right next to the Milan Ilich Pavilion, and is the new hub for medical education, featuring two seminar rooms and a clinical skills training room equipped with an observation area.
As construction progresses, these are the latest updates. To facilitate the demolition of the Park Centre and Rotunda for the new Yurkovich Family Pavilion, teams throughout the hospital were relocated. Last fall, programs and services from the Rotunda moved to the renovated fifth floor of the North Tower, while the IV clinic relocated to the ground floor of the Milan Ilich Pavilion. The Cancer Care Clinic was renovated and relocated to the ground floor of the Milan Ilich Pavilion, opening its doors in November 2023. Work is currently underway on the interim Psychiatric Assessment Unit near the South Tower, with planning for the Yurkovich Family Pavilion procurement and pre-work for the Rotunda demolition also in progress.
