Learn about the field of Recreation Therapy

October 29, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

In an effort to spread the word about the amazing field of Recreation Therapy and more specifically what it’s like to work as a Recreation Therapist and Recreation Therapy Assistant at VCH, Professional Practice and Recruitment have joined forces to host an exciting open house on Tuesday, October 29th from 6-7pm in the GF Strong Lecture Theatre.

The purpose of this inaugural event is to offer students, graduates and those in the private sector a sneak peek on this exciting profession and the diverse areas of practice we offer – Long-Term Care, Rehabilitation and Mental Health.

What is Recreation Therapy?

Recreation Therapy plays a crucial role in helping people navigate, access and enjoy meaningful recreation and leisure. Health restoration and a renewed sense of purpose and well-being are often improved through recreation therapy interventions and services. Health care professionals in this field support people with a variety of abilities, helping them to both set and reach personal leisure based goals.

Hear from our Recreation Therapists

“Working in Recreation Therapy at VCH right now is an exciting and inspiring time. The new Practice Lead role promotes a strong scope of practice for Recreation Therapists and we are working together to standardize processes and implement best practices that will positively impact the clients we serve,” shares Inge, Recreation Therapist at Cedarview Lodge.

Katie, Recreation Therapist at VGH also shares her experience working with a collaborative team, “I feel supported every day in my role. I get the opportunity to meet frequently with our recreation therapy practice lead and be a part of practice committee meetings where there is the opportunity to discuss complex cases, share education opportunities, ideas, etc. I am also very lucky to have a supportive interdisciplinary team that supports and values the role of recreation therapy.”
