Community Health Workers (CHW) are an integral health care role within Vancouver Coastal Health. These health care professionals are a core part of our communities as caregivers and make a significant impact on the quality of life of their clients and patients.
Meet Melinda Gordovez, a CHW who joined VCH about a year ago and now working with the Sunshine Coast – Home Support team. Originally from Beaumont, Alberta, Melinda desired to relocate to a smaller city with a community feel and found beautiful Sechelt.
“The remote location of the coast was my main motivation to move here,” she says. “. I am an adventurous person. Sechelt fulfills my fondness to be with nature – I get to go to work seeing wildlife, inhaling the fresh scents of the trees and salty breeze of the bay and hearing birds sing gives me a nostalgic feeling of home.”
Melinda enjoys her role on the Home Support team and being able to drive around to different places to visit clients and discovering scenic spots along the way. “My motivation is to expand my knowledge in this health care field and share them with my colleagues.”
She also feels well supported by her team – everyone from managers, admin staff, schedulers, nurses and LPN supervisors. “A simple ‘how was your day?’ makes a big difference during long work days.
From the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, all health care workers were mandated to properly don and doff PPE (personal protective equipment). “The biggest challenge of wearing PPE is the confusion it caused with clients with communication difficulties,” she says. “To overcome this, I would speak very slowly and sometimes accompany that with sign language and writing things down on paper.”
“Being a community health worker is a challenging yet very rewarding experience because I get the opportunity to listen to my clients’ wonderful stories from their youthful days.”
