Staff Spotlight
Alyssa Dixon, Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)
Kicking off our highlight of Speech Language Pathologists at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is Alyssa Dixon, who works as an Early Intervention Speech Language Pathologist at Powell River Community Health.
Working in a rural community, Alyssa tells us that health care professionals get to do many different things in one typical work day. “Some days I start by spending a morning at a child care centre, then see a few children one-on-one in the clinic and end the day with a team meeting with colleagues at the child development centre,” she explains. “Other days I’m out in the community meeting families at local drop-in groups or offering education sessions for parents or other professionals.”
Alyssa enjoys being able to work so closely with families within her role. “It is a privilege to play a small part in supporting a child’s health, well-being and success.”
Originally from Ontario, Alyssa and her husband spent several years living in northern B.C. and were ready to explore new opportunities. Knowing they wanted to stay within the province, Alyssa found the job posting for an early intervention SLP position in Powell River. “It came at the perfect time and Powell River seemed like a wonderful little community.”
In her role, Alyssa tells us that the best moments to happen are when a child communicates clearly for the first time. “Whether it is saying a word, using a sign, pointing to a picture or saying a really hard sound, that moment seems to slow down time. “The child understands they did it and their parents light up with their child’s success. It makes my heart burst with joy every single time.”
Working within a rural SLP team, Alyssa says she connects with them on a regular basis despite their different work sites. “We always know we are just a phone call away,” she says. “The whole team at Powell River Community Health is incredible. You know you can rely on your team to step and help whenever needed.”
