An Emergency Physician’s commitment to quality patient care
Emergency medicine embodied all the values Dr. Tina Chiang was looking for in a medical career. Since completing her residency in 2021, she has been working as an Emergency Physician at Richmond Hospital (RH) under Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).
The dynamic nature of emergency medicine
No two shifts in the Emergency Department (ED) are the same. Patients are triaged based on the severity of their conditions, so Tina may need to shift her focus to attending to another patient who requires more immediate critical care. This unpredictability keeps Tina engaged, knowing that she can make a difference in someone’s life when they need it the most. “I love the dynamic nature of the ED, which continually challenges me to adapt, think quickly, and prioritize effectively to ensure all patients receive timely and suitable care,” she affirms.
Tina addresses a diverse range of medical issues and provides care for patients across the age spectrum. “Every shift brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow,” she says. “Whether it's treating trauma victims, managing acute illnesses, or providing care for patients in acute mental health crises, each day presents a unique set of circumstances that keep me on my toes.”
Connected by teamwork and learning
Tina enjoys working in a team-based environment, which includes paramedics, nurses, allied health professionals and more, to deliver optimal patient care. Every contribution is valued, fostering a positive work environment. “Working at RH ED has been an immensely fulfilling experience, largely due to the exceptional team dynamic that defines our workplace culture,” Tina shares. “When I joined the VCH team, I was welcomed into a community of dedicated health care professionals who share a common passion for delivering high-quality patient care.”
The team rallies together during difficult times, offering encouragement and guidance. This camaraderie motivates Tina to push through challenges and deliver the highest standard of care. “The support within the Richmond emergency department team is incomparable,” she expresses. Tina also appreciates the consultants who also play a pivotal role in patient care and ongoing professional development.
The Richmond Emergency Physician group promotes a healthy work-life balance, periodic sabbatical leave, and supports interests outside of emergency medicine. They foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development through initiatives including their journal club and regular Morbidity and Morality rounds. The journal club serves as a platform for discussing and exploring new clinical practices, while the rounds provide a space for emotional processing, case review and identifying areas to improve patient care and safety. These activities strengthen the team’s bond and commitment to exceptional patient care.
Tina is passionate about medical education as both a learner and a mentor. She finds fulfillment in mentoring the next generation of health care professionals through student and resident education. “Being able to impart knowledge, share clinical experiences and mentor while I’m on shift allows me to reflect on my practice and continuously improve as a clinician.”
