Vancouver General Hospital Intensive Care Unit

Emergency Medicine

The Department of Emergency Medicine comprises a group of dedicated and collegial physicians who cover the Vancouver General Hospital Emergency Department and associated UBC Urgent Care Centre in Vancouver, Richmond Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital, Sechelt Hospital, qathet General Hospital and other community hospitals within the region. Vancouver Coastal Health Emergency Physicians are at the forefront of emergency medicine in the province with Vancouver Coastal Health housing a Level 1 Trauma Centre and a well-respected academic center. Vancouver Coastal Health’s community hospitals are well-supported and provide care to a diverse patient population including pediatrics, acute medicine and geriatrics.

Licensure for Physicians at VCH

​If you are fully licensed to practice in British Columbia, you are immediately eligible as a candidate for vacant positions in Vancouver Coastal Health’s communities.

If you are a physician working in other parts of Canada or applying from overseas, you must have your credentials approved and gain confirmed eligibility for a licence to practice in B.C. through the ​​College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. There are additional organizations involved in the credentialing of physicians in Canada:

​​​If you are an International Medical Graduate (IMG) without a credentialing certificate, visit Health Match BC. They provide advice and support with your required preliminary assessments. 

If you are trained outside of Canada, the BC Physician Integration Program provides IMGs with a comprehensive orientation and introduction to the provincial health care system. You must be on the registry with the CPSBC.
