How to access mental health and substance use support on the North Shore

Contact intake teams for help finding non-life-threatening mental health or substance use support for people of all ages if you live or stay on the North Shore, including North Vancouver and West Vancouver. 

When you call or walk in, our intake teams can connect you to the right services or resources when and where you need them. 

Free interpreting services are also available in other languages.

Emergency Department at Lions Gate Hospital (LGH)

For emergencies, call 9-1-1 or go to the emergency room. When you arrive and check in at LGH, you may be guided to the Psychiatric Emergency and Assessment Team (PEAT) for support. PEAT provides access to prompt psychiatric assessments through the Emergency Department at LGH.

Children and youth services on the North Shore
Find information on services available for mental health and substance use for children and youth, including services at Foundry North Shore. Many youth services support people up to age 19 or 24. 

    • Psychiatric Emergency and Assessment Team (PEAT)

      This service provides prompt psychiatric assessments through the Emergency Department at Lions Gate Hospital (LGH) to residents of the North Shore and surrounding areas.

    • Central Intake Team at the HOpe Centre

      This service offers information and helps connect adults aged 19 or older to mental health services and resources on the North Shore. Contact us for more information.

    • Acute Home-Based Treatment Program (AHBT) - North Shore

      This service provides acute, short-term, mental health treatment in your home. AHBT service is for people experiencing an increase in symptoms or distress related to mental illness or substance use.

    • Adult Community Psychiatric Services

      This service is for people who have a serious or persistent mental illness or who may be in the process of developing such a disorder. A referral from a health-care provider is required.

    • Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) Coastal

      This service provides comprehensive services including early identification and treatment of psychosis for people aged 13 to 30. Contact us for more information.

    • Harm Reduction Supplies & Needle Distribution Site at Central Community Health Centre

    • Magnolia House

      This service provides short-term psychiatric emergency and crisis intervention for adults aged 19 or older who have psychiatric diagnoses and are in crisis. A referral from a psychiatrist is required or the Emergency Department at Lions Gate Hospital coordinates admission.

    • Mental Health Inpatient Services

      This service provides acute inpatient assessment and treatment services for adults aged 19 or older who require psychiatric hospitalization in an acute care, mental health setting.

    • North Vancouver Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC)

      An Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC) is the place you can go to get same-day care for urgent and non-life-threatening health concerns. This includes mental health concerns such as low mood, anxiety and depression

    • Primary Care Clinic

      This service provides primary care for people who don’t have a regular family doctor and have complex medical, mental health and substance use, and/or socio-economic needs such as housing, income or access to food. Clients are directed to this service by other health-care providers or community service providers.

    • Stepping Stones Substance Use Services

      This service provides substance use support to adults aged 19 or over, whether their goals are to use substances more safely, not use at all or to just get information. Contact this service or walk in for more information.

    • Transition Program

      This service is a 12 to 16-week rehabilitation-focused psychosocial rehabilitation program for people aged 18 or older who have mental health and substance use concerns.

    • Older Adult Mental Health Services

      This service provides community-based mental health services to improve the quality of life of older adults aged 65 or older who are vulnerable due to a combination of psychiatric, medical, and social factors. A referral from a health-care provider is required.

    • Kelty Dennehy Resource Centre

      Located on the main floor of the HOpe Centre, this service offers resources for patients and families affected by mental health and substance use.

    • British Columbia Schizophrenia Society

      BCSS provides support to families across British Columbia who are affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses.

    • Family Services of the North Shore

      An accredited not-for-profit, community-based agency that offers affordable and sometimes subsidized education, support and counselling services.

    • Mood Disorders Association of BC

      Located at #1450 605 Robson St., Vancouver. Call (604) 873-0103. Option 1 for Psychiatric Clinic and option 2 for the Counselling Office.

    • Canadian Mental Health Association

      Provides mental health promotion and mental illness recovery for people of all ages and their families.

    • Pathways Serious Mental Illness Society

      Offers a monthly support group and a 12-week “family to family” education group. Located at 205-1865 Marine Drive, West Vancouver.

    • North Shore Meals on Wheels

      Delivers nutritious meals to seniors, caregivers, individuals with medical conditions, and/or people recovering from surgery, illness or injury.

    • Pathways Serious Mental Illness Society

      We are families of loved ones living with a serious mental illness helping other families with this shared experience in British Columbia.
